"Makeup is art. Beauty is Spirit." Imma be real with you for a second. I love makeup. I love buying it. I love putting it on. I love wearing it. I love getting complimented on it. In fact you will rarely see me without it. That's not because I feel uncomfortable without it or bare or anything, I just simply don't like to pass over the opportunity to make a little art project on my face. To all the guys that think women wear makeup to attract men or to be higher than other women or whatever you tell yourselves... just don't. Firstly, not everything is about you. That's not to say some women don't wear makeup for men or for anyone else for that matter, because maybe they do. No matter what their reason is, it's their face, not yours. Secondly, I honestly don't care what men really have to say about makeup unless they themselves wear it. I won't tell you how to shave your beard, so don't tell me how to paint my face. There is no shame in wearing makeup no matter what your reason is. Now that that's out of the way, here are a few pointers to the population of us that do wear makeup because I've learned a lot from all of my friends who are beauticians and cosmetologists. 1. You Don't Need Expensive Brushes
Sigma brushes may look wonderful, but it's a trap. I can tell you that I have had many brushes in my day and my favorite ones were the cheap ones you get online. Save money on brushes and splurge on the products. The brush set I use and recommend is by Shany (It's original price is $40.00 but you can get it on Amazon for a little under $35.00) 2. The Dollar Store Is Not Sephora If you are going to the dollar store to buy makeup that you are expecting to actually stay on and look nice... it may be in your best interest to leave. LA Colors and Physicians Formula are not going to do the trick. Do yourself a favor and go over to Walgreens and pick up something else. The dollar store is where clear skin and eyelashes go to die. 3. Wash Your Face I cannot tell you how many times I have gone to sleep with makeup on and gotten a stye because of it. In order to keep your skin soft, you should really wash your face and use a moisturizer at the most basic level. Find something that works for your skin and use it at least once a day. 4. Eyeliner Is An Art Form It took me two years to perfect my wings. Two. Years. And I still have bad days. But don't sweat it. The trick is not to jump the gun. Let me introduce you to the evolution of eyeliner. It goes- Pencil, Angle, Felt, Brush. Let me translate: Pencil: It's good to start off with a pencil because no matter how much you screw up, you can always smudge things out. You might end up with a really intense smokey eye but hey those are in. My favorite pencil liner is the Aqua XL by Makeup Forever. I've tried Nars, Urban Decay, Stila, and Bare Minerals, but nothing compares. Its smooth, bold, and durable. Angle: After you have mastered the pencil. Its good to move onto something sharper. A gel liner is easy to control because it's solid and it leaves a cleaner edge than pencil. However, there is more at risk if you screw it up because you can't blend it out as easily unless you just want to look like a raccoon (raccoon eyes do not equal smokey eyes. There is a difference). I recommend an angled brush with Bobbi Brown's Long Wear Gel Eyeliner. It's their fifth most popular product and the best gel in the market. Felt: You're almost there but before you jump into brushes, you might want to think about a felt tip. They have the same look once they are applied but in my experience they don't last as long and the don't have phenomenal coverage. But felts are easy to control because it's basically a sponge with a tip. I'd vouch for the Stila Waterproof Liner. I used a felt tip for about a year and they are quite useful for wings or any other design. Brush: And finally, my ultimate favorite makeup item of all time- the liquid brush. It lasts for months, it's dark, pigmented, bold, precise, and stays on like no other. I will never not buy the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. It's perfect. I will name my first daughter "Kat Von D" to honor this makeup piece. Bonus: It's also the most affordable out of all of the above liners ($19.00). 5. Wear What You Like and Don't Apologize for It I like darker eye makeup, my friend Olivia loves highlight and bronzer, some people just like mascara, others just foundation. And it's all beautiful in moderation. No matter what you like, never let anyone tell you, "you should lighten up," or "You should really invest in some..." because you are beautiful with or without makeup. In fact if someone has the nerve to tell you to buy something because of a flaw, you have my permission to smack their makeup off their face. There is a time and place for coaching in a loving manner but it shouldn't be a humiliating experience. Take it from me, I love skirts and dresses just as much as I like my black liner and espresso eyeshadow. Makeup is an expression of beauty, so wear what makes you feel beautiful.
